PAGE, Ariz. — Recovery efforts were underway Friday afternoon at Lake Powell after a man went underwater and never resurfaced Thursday.

The National Park Service Glen Canyon Dispatch received multiple calls around 2 p.m. Thursday from Lone Rock Beach reporting a person was in distress and possibly drowning, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. According to initial reports, a 51-year-old male went underwater near the Lone Rock area of Lake Powell and never resurfaced.

Several agencies responded and search efforts began Thursday evening despite high winds in the area, the sheriff’s office said. The body was not recovered and the search resumed Friday morning. Officials used a side-scan sonar to search a ¼ square mile area with water reaching around 78 feet deep.

Boaters should stay clear of the area during the recovery efforts. Crews from the National Park Service, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Parks, Classic LifeGuard Aviation and Greenhaven Fire Department are helping in the recovery.

The victim has not yet been located or identified.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
