MILLCREEK — Unified police detectives investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy were looking Monday at whether the boy suffered a series of abuses before he died.

Investigators learned of at least two prior recent incidents in which Ethan Antes was seriously injured, but in each case the injuries were reported as accidents, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. Neither of the prior injuries were reported, said Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell.

Codey Levi Jolley, 28, of Millcreek, was booked into jail for investigation of child abuse homicide and child abuse after his stepson, Ethan, was allegedly found face down in a bathtub Friday.

The child was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Sunday.

Jolley told detectives that he had left Ethan in the bathtub at their apartment, 362 E. 4115 South, sitting in an upright position while he went to the kitchen to make food, according to police.

"He realized he had forgotten about the child and he returned to the bathroom and observed the child floating in the bathtub face down," the report states.

After pulling the boy out of the tub and draining the water, "Cody stated he attempted CPR but did not know what he was doing. He then called 911," according to the report.

The first arriving officers, however, reported discovering that Ethan had "trauma to his upper body."

When the toddler got to the hospital, doctors found his injuries were "consistent with abuse" and because of the severity of the injuries he was "not expected to survive," the report states.

An autopsy at the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office was scheduled for Monday to determine how Ethan died, or if water played a role in the death.

When detectives interviewed Jolley, they learned of at least two other incidents in which Ethan was recently injured.

Jolley said that three weeks ago, "the child had spilled scalding coffee on his head and upper torso," causing first- and second-degree burns, police wrote in the report. Jolley said he was the only one home at the time.

On Thursday, a day before Ethan was found in the tub, Jolley told police that the boy "fell from his highchair, striking his head on the table, causing bruising to the right side of his face. Again, Codey was the only one present with the child," according to the report.

In 2013, Jolley took a plea in abeyance to an amended charge of attempted drug possession and driving on a revoked license, according to court records. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to DUI. In 2006, Jolley pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
