WEBER COUNTY — A high wind event concentrated in Davis and Weber Counties began Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning, causing power outages and significant damage in affected areas. Approximately 3,830 Rocky Mountain Power customers, mostly in Ogden and surrounding areas, were without power Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service of Salt Lake City, the strongest winds along the northern Wasatch Front continued through Sunday morning and remained strong through the afternoon.

The Salt Lake City NWS reported the first 90 mph gusts of wind at the junction of Park Lane and US-89 in Farmington at approximately 4:45 a.m. with a max measurement of 91 mph at 5:52 a.m. Sunday.

Road closures

The Utah Department of Transportation reported Sunday morning that I-15 in Davis County was setting restrictions for high profile vehicles. That restriction was lifted as of 10:45 a.m.

According to Lt. Lee Perry of Utah Highway Patrol, I-15 northbound near Corinne, Utah in Box Elder County would be shut down while UHP cleared three tipped semitrucks that fell during the windstorm. I-15 northbound was completely shut down and traffic was being rerouted through S.R. 13. Southbound traffic had one lane open. UHP reopened I-15 northbound at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Perry also said that the area would continue to be restricted to high profile vehicles. Perry added that all three semitrucks that tipped were empty and susceptible to the wind.

Park Lane in Farmington:

Damage

Kaysville City posted a video on their Facebook page documenting severe damage to a home on Oxford Drive where a large tree fell into the house. No one was injured in the incident.

Hundreds of people are reporting damage in their area, including downed trees, broken fences and missing roofing and siding from their homes.

Power outage

There is currently a large-scale power outage in Layton and Ogden, affecting the surrounding areas and leaving approximately 24,000 people without power, Rocky Mountain Power reported Sunday at 1 p.m.. They said that all available crews are working on restoring power to those without power.

Safety

As a reminder, Rocky Mountain Power said to treat all down power lines as live and dangerous and to not attempt to move them. As an additional safety reminder, any stoplights that are out as a result of the outages should be treated as a four-way stop.
