SALT LAKE CITY — Two Highland High School students have been arrested for investigation of making terroristic threats against the school.

The boys were arrested Wednesday afternoon by Salt Lake City police. Highland Principal Chris Jenson said even though the threat was taken seriously, police found no credible evidence to suggest the students would have actually carried it out.

"There's no way they could have carried out any of the things they were saying," he said. "We're very convinced we're safe at the school at this point."

Jenson said the threat was "really a misguided prank."

Police received a tip about threats of "a possible active shooter plot" about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The alleged shooting was to happen Friday, said Salt Lake police detective Veronica Montoya.

The tip came from a parent of another student who had heard about the threat, Jenson said. The principal said he did not know Thursday how the boys were allegedly making the threats, whether it was on social media, though text messages, or if they had verbally told other students about it.

After officers found the boys, they were interviewed, their bedrooms and school lockers searched, and they were arrested and taken to juvenile detention. Jenson said it was his understanding that no weapons were found.

Jenson did not release information Thursday about the age of the boys or what grades they were in.
