SALT LAKE CITY — Brandon Cox continues to impress during Utah’s spring practice session.

The junior quarterback completed 16 of 24 passes for 158 yards while scattering four touchdown throws and an interception in the Utes’ second spring scrimmage Saturday morning at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

“I feel like I played well,” Cox said. “As an offense, I think we came out here and set the tone and set the intensity today. That was the objective: set the intensity and show the defense we are ready to play.”

Cox opened the first series with a 30-yard bomb to Harrison Handley that set up Joe Williams’ 8-yard TD run. The junior from Pasadena, California, then found Siaosi Wilson for an 18-yard scoring strike on the next offensive drive, and followed that up with an 11-yard run on the ensuing possession.

Cox also threw a pair of TD passes to Chad Hekking and Caleb Repp in the scrimmage.

“It was a very positive scrimmage,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. “We came out healthy, got a lot of work done, and it was good to see the offense take a step forward.”

Tyler Huntley made 10 of 23 attempts for 65 yards with a touchdown and an interception while running the backup quarterback spot.

“When you’ve got good players going against good players, sometimes you don’t look so good,” Whittingham said. “We’ll get a pretty good gauge as soon as the season starts. But I’ve got an inclination that we’re a pretty good football team.”

Andy Phillips connected on a 50-yard field goal during the special teams portion, and Mitch Wishnowsky booted a 45-yarder for the Utes, who will conclude spring camp next Saturday with the annual Red and White Game at noon.
