SANDY — Andre-Pierre Gignac scored in the 91st minute, and Mexico's Tigres UANL eliminated Real Salt Lake from the CONCACAF Champions' League quarterfinals with a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Tigres advanced 3-1 on aggregate after shutting out RSL at home last week.

RSL, which was playing in its first competitive home match in 2016, went ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute through a goal by Joao Plata. The diminuitive Ecuadorian finished recently re-acquired striker Yura Movsisyan's cross into the box to give Salt Lake a halftime advantage.

RSL needed at least two goals to force extra time, though, after falling 2-0 at Tigres in the first leg of the quarterfinal series in Monterrey, Mexico. The MLS side out-shot Tigres, 12-4 with four shots on frame, but couldn't find the back of the net after Plata's finish.

RSL midfielder Javier Morales earned a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, but Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman saved it, dropped it, then saw Morales awarded a yellow card after charging for the loose ball.

Liga MX swept MLS teams in four Champions League quarterfinals Tuesday and Wednesday. Aside from RSL, Seattle Sounders FC fell to Club America 3-1 on aggregate Wednesday evening, the Los Angeles Galaxy lost 4-0 to Santos Laguna, and D.C. United fell to Queretaro FC after a 1-1 draw Tuesday.

RSL opens MLS play Sunday at Orlando City SC. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon MT.
