SALT LAKE CITY — A 23-year-old woman was injured when her car crashed into a moose in Parleys Canyon late Tuesday.

The woman was driving a red Mazda westbound on I-80 around 11:30 p.m. when her car hit the moose in the left lane near mile post 134, according to Utah Highway Patrol.

The animal hit the car's windshield, then flew over the top of the car and took the roof with it, troopers said.

The moose died. The woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers are warning drivers to beware of wild animals.

"Be vigilant, especially going through the canyon areas. This is the time of year where they may be seeing a lot of wild animals on the side of the road or in the road," said UHP Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas.

She said Parleys Canyon is an area of concern regarding wildlife and traffic. Lighting is low, making it difficult for drivers see an animal before hitting it, Lucas explained.
