BEAVER MOUNTAIN SKI AREA — Tucked away in Logan Canyon, Beaver Mountain Ski Area focuses on traditional skiing and offers affordable winter fun for families in the Cache Valley.

Beaver Mountain Ski Area was founded in 1939 and boasts being the oldest family-owned resort in the nation, according to mountain operations manager Travis Seeholzer. The resort was started by Seeholzer's paternal grandparents and is still family-owned and operated 76 years later.

"I think it actually really is quite unique just in that it is really family oriented and a lot more affordable," Seeholzer said. "A lot of people kind of refer to it as skiing the way it used to be. … It's kind of a different feel where it's definitely local and a lot of people know each other. One saying that I've heard for years up here is that 'if you lose track of your kids, somebody is going to look after them.' Just a super local feel."

Located 27 miles up Logan Canyon and about 13 miles from Garden City, the resort offers 890 skiable acres and has four chairlifts and a conveyor. It allows skiing, snowboarding and snow bikes and used to have a tubing hill that was discontinued in 2003.

The resort also has two terrain parks, one of which has six rails and five jumps that are built for beginners. The Rodeo Grounds Terrain Park is geared toward more advanced skiers and snowboarders and offers three jumps and 12 boxes and rails. The terrain park is accessed by the Marge's Triple Chairlift, and the park is located throughout the entire ski run.

While the resort doesn't own or operate any Nordic skiing areas, it is located adjacent to trails that it helps maintain and groom. The Beaver Bottoms trail is located near the ski area and offers around 5 miles of Nordic trails.

Due to the smaller size of the resort, there isn't any lodging available on the grounds, but there are hotels in Logan and nearby Garden City, Seeholzer said. The closest lodging facility is the Beaver Creek Lodge, which is located about 1 mile from Beaver Mountain Ski Area. For adventurous campers, the resort rents out a yurt year-round that accommodates 20 people and has an adjacent building with a kitchen and restrooms.

Hungry skiers and snowboarders can eat at the Beaver Mountain Cafe, catered by Off-Premise Catering. The cafe offers specialty sandwiches, pizza, homemade soups and a great street taco bar, Seeholzer said.

While the focus is currently on winter sports, the resort also has camping available during the summer months. There are around 15 private tent campsites, 26 sites with full hookups for RVs and 15 sites with partial hookups for RVs and trailers.

Location: 12400 E. 12900 North, Logan

Hours: Open daily from 9-4 p.m. Night skiing is available from 5-9 p.m., but is often rented out to private groups. Check the resort website for public night skiing days.

Price: A day lift ticket for adults is $48 and a lift ticket for children 11 years old and younger is $38. Season passes go on sale in March and cost $325 for adults. Night skiing is $12 on weekdays and $15 on Friday and Saturday nights.
