LA VERKIN, Washington County — A man was arrested after allegedly taking advantage of a car owner's kindness Friday.

The car owner was outside warming up his Nissan Xterra in the driveway of his home when Bobby Allen Garcia approached him at about 6:35 a.m., according to the Hurricane City Police Department.

"(Garcia) asked for a glass of water, which was given to him," a statement from police reads. "While outside the owner of the vehicle went back toward the front door of the residence to talk to his wife. He then found the glass of water on the porch and the vehicle was gone."

Police said Garcia stole the Xterra, which was left unlocked because its owner was outside, while the owner was briefly distracted.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office located Garcia and the Xterra in LaVerkin at about 7:42 a.m. He was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, which is a second degree felony, according to police.

"This incident shows how quickly someone can steal a vehicle," the statement from the Hurricane Police Department reads. "Unfortunately our small community is turning into a large community and we cannot be as trusting as we once were."
