Our lives are greatly affected by hormones. They make us feel good! When they are low or imbalanced, our bodies become fatigued, sick and dysfunctional. Hormones affect our metabolism, sex differentiation and libido. They also have hundreds of other functions in our bodies (estrogen alone has over 400 functions).

With that said, did you know by balancing your hormones you not only improve your sex life, but you also improve your overall health? Living and aging well is directly correlated to your hormone balance.

Below are seven functions of hormones that improve your quality of life. Dr. Brian Rodgers of The Family Wellness Clinic has been balancing hormones for over 10 years and offered the following information.

Osteoporosis

Contrary to common belief, both women's and men's bones become less dense as they grow older. This is due to the declining levels of the hormones estrogen and testosterone (yes, women have about 5-10 percent of the testosterone men have, and estrogen levels rise as men age). Studies show that estrogen and testosterone will not only stop the bone loss, but will also make the bones stronger.

Body composition

A properly working thyroid is crucial for maintaining a proper weight since its main function is to set the metabolism for the body. Weight gain can occur if the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone. If estrogen balance is off or if testosterone is low, it is not as easy maintaining a healthy weight.

Improve memory

Having trouble remembering names or where you left your car keys? You may have a low testosterone level or an estrogen imbalance. The brain has receptors for these hormones. Proper levels of estrogen and testosterone help the brain function properly. Proper hormone levels also decreases the risk of Alzheimer's disease. In women, this can decrease up to 50 percent.

Emotional well-being

These days, it seems there is an increasing amount of depression and intake of depression medicines. There are many causes of depression. One of them is low hormone levels. Proper hormone (thyroid, progesterone, estrogen and testosterone) balance and proper levels contribute to our emotional well-being. Some people suffer from seasonal mood disorder and can get depressed during the winter months. Often, these people have a low vitamin D level. Vitamin D, a hormone, is a precursor to many of the brain chemicals that affect our mood.

Improved lipid balance

New studies are frequently being published about cholesterol or heart disease. We all know that we need to lower our cholesterol. To do so we are encouraged to eat right, exercise and take statin drugs to lower our serum lipid levels. Many hormones including thyroid, estrogen and testosterone can lower lipid levels and lower our cardiovascular risk. It should also be noted that if we take synthetic hormones, which are similar to, but different from what our body naturally produces, can increase our lipid levels and cardiovascular risk.

Improved skin quality

Did you know there is estrogen in many cosmetics and skin products? Why? Because estrogen improves the collagen in your skin. This makes skin look healthier, younger and have fewer wrinkles.

Anti-inflammatory

Testosterone is a very good anti-inflammatory. One reason our joints start hurting more as we get older is that we have decreasing amounts of testosterone. Many inflammatory conditions can be improved with proper levels of testosterone.
