ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — Dixie State University has narrowed the list of possible new nicknames to three: Trailblazers, Sun Warriors and Raptors.

The Spectrum in St. George reports the finalists were chosen following an Internet survey. The name change is part of a school rebrand. The current nickname is the Red Storm.

The university's sports teams used to be called the Rebels before it was dropped in the mid-2000s along with a confederate soldier mascot.

University officials recently voted to keep the Dixie State name despite critics saying it symbolizes racism and slavery.

Each new name would come with an accompany mascot. The Trailblazers would be a buffalo; the Sun Warriors the Greco-Roman god of light; and the Raptors a dinosaur.

School officials hope to make a decision in the spring.
