SALT LAKE CITY — Police say two people fled from a traffic stop about 5 a.m. Friday and ended up crashing into an overpass.

Police stopped the sport utility vehicle because one person inside had a number of warrants. After police pulled one passenger out of the SUV, the driver then fled, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Andy Oblad.

Another officer saw the SUV westbound on 800 South, but wasn't close enough to see where it was going, according to Oblad. Officers later discovered that the vehicle had crashed into the I-15 overpass at 800 South.

The driver and another passenger who were in the car at the time of the crash had serious injuries and were in custody at different hospitals Friday, Oblad said.

Police are unsure why the crash occurred, but accident investigators are looking into the case.

Police notified the Utah Department of Transportation of the crash. UDOT officials said the overpass is structurally sound.
