THE GREAT OUTDOORS — There are lots of options available when it comes to bike trailers. And this won't change anytime soon because more and more recreation brands are seeing trailers as a lucrative addition to their product line. So how do you choose the best trailer for your family?

One of the most basic distinctions is price. For less than $80, you can buy a serviceable trailer at Walmart. At the other end of the spectrum, you can pay well over $1,000 for a high-end model. The D'Lite from Burley lies squarely in the middle. It boasts nearly all the same features found in the $1,300 Chariot Chinook 2 from Thule, but costs half the price.

The D'Lite is designed for effortless functionality. It's easy to assemble, has push-button axle wheels and folds down impressively small for storage. It can accommodate two children, with a maximum capacity of 100 pounds. And the cargo compartment is seriously huge, elevating the D'Lite from a simple trailer to a family-gear transporter.

One of the main areas the D'Lite excels is with its safety features. Like most models on the market, it has reflective materials and front, rear and wheel reflectors. It also has UV-blocking windows, a parking brake and an internal roll cage. The adjustable handlebar (for when you're using it as a stroller) can rotate forward and serve as an additional roll bar. These features combine to give you peace of mind every time you head out on a ride with your children.

Speaking of children, Burley seriously makes the most kid-friendly trailers on the market. They use a patented harness system that ensures the straps keep their shape at all times. So instead of sagging down to the bottom of the seat, the straps are open and ready for when you need to buckle your child in. It's amazing what a difference this makes.

The D'Lite is also one of the most comfortable trailers for young riders. It has padded seats, padded harness straps and ample legroom. The upper portion of the interior is recessed so your child can fit comfortably while wearing a bike helmet. These innovative elements result in longer rides with fewer complaints.

With its substantial price tag, the D'Lite isn't for everyone. But if you're looking for a safe and reliable trailer with top-of-the-line features, it's tough to beat it.
