FARMINGTON — In keeping with tradition, the final steel beam was topped off with an American flag, a state flag and, for good measure, a small tree.

Officials from University of Utah Health Care celebrated the halfway point of construction of the system's 12th medical center with a traditional "topping ceremony" on Tuesday. The Farmington Health Center will be the U.'s flagship medical center in Davis County.

"We like to say it's almost a mini-version of what you find up on the hill," said University of Utah Health Care spokeswoman Marissa Villasenor.

The Farmington Health Center will offer the same services provided at University Health Care, Huntsman Cancer Institute and Moran Eye Center, including same-day surgery, urgent care services and a full service drive-thru pharmacy. The facility will also provide pediatric care, she said.

The 200,000-square-foot facility will be one of the U.'s largest community clinics, along with the South Jordan Health Center that opened in 2012.

"That was the first phase of really branching out," said Villasenor, who said the Farmington Health Center will be similar to the South Jordan center.

The U. is focusing on expanding to areas of Utah where it doesn't have a large footprint. Right now, the U.'s only presence in Davis County has been a small clinic in Centerville.

The Farmington Health Center will be completed in the fall of 2016. It's being built next to Station Park, off of I-15 and U.S. 89.

"Just like South Jordan, we wanted to make it in the heart of the community so people have access to it and if you're running errands at the grocery store or the mall, it's convenient for anybody to stop by," Villasenor said.
