MURRAY — A couple accused of stealing at least seven cars — all Hondas — mainly from TRAX station parking lots, now faces criminal charges.

Roger Dale Hatch, 33, of Midvale, and Brittany Ann Seal, 31, of Herriman, were charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with seven counts of theft, a second-degree felony. In addition, Hatch was charged with failing to stop for police, a class A misdemeanor, and Seal was charged with theft by deception, a class B misdemeanor.

Since March, prosecutors believe the couple has stolen at least seven Honda Accords or Civics using a shaved key, with six of those thefts occurring in about a 10-day period in September.

What is a shaved key?
"It's a key that is worn down on the sides, and it can fit into the lock without having to be the existing exact cut." - San Diego County Regional Auto Theft Task Force Capt. Lisa Wrobel.

According to charging documents, the cars were stolen from TRAX stations in Sandy, Murray, Midvale, Draper and West Jordan, and from the Fashion Place Mall parking lot. In most cases, the stolen cars were found abandoned at other TRAX stations or apartment complexes. In some cases, the stereos were removed and sold at local pawn shops.

On Oct. 2, after surveillance video of the couple was shared with numerous law enforcement agencies, a Unified police officer spotted Hatch near 7200 South and 100 East and Hatch tried to run away from him, according to the charges.
