CLEARFIELD — Millions of motorists often get help by calling AAA following traffic accidents and vehicle breakdowns.

Now, more than 4 million AAA members in the western region will get their assistance by those working at the company's new service center in Clearfield at 888 S. 2000 East.

AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah just opened the state-of-the-art service center. Not only will it handle emergency road calls throughout the western U.S., it will also bring about 750 new jobs to Utah.

"This is not a minimum-wage type job," Clearfield Mayor Mark Shepherd said. "They're bringing in people at $13 to $15 an hour, with ability to do $21 an hour to $60,000 a year. They're not just low-end jobs. These are family supporting wages."

The new, 79,000-square-foot service center is one of 50 in the country that handles roadside emergency calls, travel planning and insurance sales.

Utah has about 200,000 members, said Jim Twardos, executive vice president of AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah.

This center will serve more than 4 million AAA members in Utah, Nevada and northern California.

"So we'll be handling over 4 million requests for roadside assistance per year, as well as membership calls for people who want to update their membership, or buy memberships, also travel and insurance," Twardos said.

Prior to this center opening, all calls were handled at AAA centers in other states. The Clearfield building was vacant for five years before AAA came in.

"We have things like a mother's room, game room, full gym as well as wellness room where we can have yoga classes," Twardos said.

Development spawns development, so bringing in jobs means, we need restaurants, we need places for them to shop, we need apartments and places for them the live in. it creates development.

It's all about making the work environment pleasant, which comes through on the phones when talking to members, he said. "A happy voice equates to a happy member."

Shepherd said the center also provides a positive economic boost into the future.

"Development spawns development," Shepherd said, "so bringing in jobs means, we need restaurants, we need places for them to shop, we need apartments and places for them the live in. it creates development."

Right now, 400 people work in the building and AAA plans to hire 350 more.

"That's a big deal," Shepherd said. "We're bringing in 750 jobs into the Clearfield area. That is always a big deal."
