SALT LAKE CITY — Imagine, as a teenager, leaving home, and heading off to war to help save the world. That's what millions of young Americans did during World War II.
Now, some feel they've been forgotten, but thanks to the Utah Honor Flight, they're finding out that's simply not true.
Late Saturday night in Salt Lake City, 50 World War II veterans returned home from a free trip to see their memorial in Washington, D.C.
This trip was a little different than most, due to some heavy rain in the area. While they still headed out to see the World War II Memorial, much of their time was spent indoors at places like the National Archives and the Library of Congress.
But a little rain didn't spoil their time, as the vets soaked in every moment, and the reception they received back in Utah left many struggling for words.
"I'm amazed," one returning veteran said. "Let's just put it that way. It's staggering."
"It makes me feel like an American," another said. "It was worthwhile doing what I did."
There's only one more Honor Flight scheduled for 2015 coming up at the end of October, but there are hundreds of veterans signed up, waiting to go.
