SANDY — A Sandy police officer shot and injured a man Friday after responding to a call reporting that the man had beaten his wife and son and they were hiding from him, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. at 197 E. Corrie Circle in Sandy. Three officers arrived at the home when the man, identified as Ivan Kaumans, 56 by Murray Police, came out onto the front porch armed with a rifle, said Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger.

One officer fired a shot at Kaumans and the bullet struck his arm, then continued into his chest, Carriger said. Kaumans was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical condition. Carriger reported Kaumans was stable later Friday evening.

"This was a very unfortunate situation the officers were placed in," he said. "It kind of highlights the kind of split second decision that officers are forced to make on a routine basis when responding to calls."

Carriger said he didn't know whether Kaumans brandished his weapon toward the officers. He also didn't know whether Kaumans fired any shots. Nobody else was hurt in the confrontation.

Carriger said the officer is a veteran of the Sandy Police Department. Police didn't release his name. He will be placed on administrative leave, per policy.

Police were called to the home after receiving a call from the wife who said her husband was beating her and their son, Carriger said.

"Officers received updated information the suspect was attempting to break down a bedroom door where the wife and son were hiding," he said.

Officers were reportedly notified en route that Kaumans keeps a rifle by the front door of the home and also had access to a knife.

Carriger was unsure whether there is a history of domestic violence calls at the home or whether officers have encountered Kaumans in the past. He said the mother and her son were doing OK, but declined to go into details about any injuries.

Karen Bethers, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, said she was surprised to learn what had happened. The family, she said, has lived in the home for about 20 years.

"It's really scary. You never think it would happen to you," she said. "I just don't know what to think."

The Murray Police Department and Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office will continue to investigate the shooting.
