SALT LAKE CITY — Westminster College inaugurated Stephen R. Morgan Saturday as the 18th president in the college's 140-year history.

Morgan took over presidential duties in July after former President Brian Levin-Stankevich retired.

"He has been working to create the best Westminster College possible for longer than I've been alive. He has been behind many of the initiatives that have even made it possible for students like me to be here," said Costa Lasiy, president of the Associated Students of Westminster College.

Morgan earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Utah and is a certified public accountant. He originally came to Westminster as an auditor with an outside company in 1981. Eventually, school officials asked hime to work for the college and he has been there ever since.

Morgan has never applied for any job at Westminster, not even the position as president, said college spokeswoman Arikka Von.

He has served as treasurer, executive vice president and vice president for institutional advancement. Since coming to the university in 1981, he has advised the past six presidents.

"Being open-minded toward change is the most important asset that a leader can have," Morgan said in a prepared statement. "In this world of higher education, the game changes every day."

Morgan grew up in Salt Lake City and attended Highland High School, just a few blocks away from the Westminster campus. He is a first-generation college graduate and the son of a local grocery store manager.

He said his wife, Sandy, seven grandchildren and three children — Amanda, Danny and Alex — are his greatest joy in life. All of his children are Westminster grads.
