Getting new carpet is a fun and rewarding process. The smell, feel and new look are exciting additions to any home, but choosing a color can often be the most difficult part of finalizing this new home addition.

Here are five questions to ask before making the final decision.

How much foot traffic does this room receive?

The amount of foot traffic a room receives could point you to a certain color more than any other factor. Think of it: Would you want light-colored carpet in a room where there will be shoes and feet walking through often? Sure, you can treat it with stain-repellant finishes, but that won't prevent the carpet from showing just how worn it's getting, and light-colored carpets will show this faster than dark.

5 questions to ask when choosing a color for your carpet

Does the carpet aid in fulfilling the purpose of the room?

Ask yourself, "What is the purpose of this room?" Will this be a more formal room with little traffic or more of a general use room where kids will play? Is the purpose of the room to create a conversational cocoon or to promote a more active environment? Whatever you decide, think of how the color of the carpet is going to aid whatever goal or purpose you have for that room (or your house in general).

Does it match the design of the room?

Think of what will be in the room or house where you intend to put in new carpet. Would you rather have carpet that seamlessly blends with the overall design or calls attention to itself in its own bold statement? Whatever color is chosen, make sure it's not competing with the rest of the home decor. Balance and complimenting is always best in deciding what color should be part of your room design.

What is the size of the room?

No matter the size of your room (or house), carpet color is your friend. Want your large room to feel cozier? Mid to darker colors can do just that. Or, say you want your small family room to feel larger. Lighter colored carpets might be just the trick. Whatever you decide, be cognizant that there is power and influence in the color of the carpet, and it can have a real effect on the feeling given to the room, whether it be large or small.

What do you feel most comfortable in?

In the end, the most important factor in deciding what carpet color is to consider what makes you feel most comfortable. Choosing your carpet color is an opportunity to show your personality and to create the type of environment you hope to create in your room or home.

Bottom line: Don't pick a color that you're not comfortable and happy with because you don't want to be wishing you'd picked differently six months from now.
