WEST VALLEY CITY — A Kearns man who allegedly attacked another man for complimenting his friend on his shirt was charged Friday with aggravated assault.

On May 23, the victim said he was exiting Copper Creek Pub, 3451 S. 5600 West, "when he complimented a man on the shirt he was wearing," according to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court.

That's when William Clyde Dobbs-Drew, 32, of Kearns, rushed out of the pub and asked the man what he had said about his friend's shirt.

"He told him that he liked it," the charges state. "(The victim) states the defendant then aggressively came up to him with his hands clenched at his waist while bouncing back and forth and lunging toward him" while asking, "What you gonna do? You gonna hit me?"

The victim "felt he needed to do something since the defendant was acting crazy, so he struck him," according to charging documents.

Dobbs-Drew stumbled backward, then approached the victim again and allegedly took a swing at him. The victim blocked the punch and then noticed a large amount of blood coming out of his hand. Dobbs-Drew showed the man a folding pocket knife with a serrated edge that he had just used to cut him, the charges state.

The victim underwent surgery to repair damage to the muscles, nerves and tendons in his hand. Doctors told him he can expect "roughly 90 percent recovery of the use of his hand," according to prosecutors.

Dobbs-Drew was charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. Court records show he has a history of being charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
