SALT LAKE CITY — Each Wednesday, the Best Friend's Animals Society comes to KSL-TV's studios to feature a pet that needs a forever home.

Lil' Wayne is a 9-year-old orange tabby cat who is the sweetest snugglebug you may ever meet, according Temma Martin from the Best Friend's Animal Society. He's "super affectionate," as is the case with most orange and buff tabby cats.

This potential snuggle buddy has a special consideration for potential adopters. Lil' Wayne is FIV positive, which means he must live indoors 100 percent of the time.

"His immune system is weaker than usual, so he needs to be protected from getting sick," Martin said. "He can live with another cat, as long as they get along. The disease is passed (between cats) through biting and mating."

September is National Preparedness Month, and Best Friend's Animal Society wants to remind pet owners to make a plan for their pets in case of an emergency, since you may not be able to immediately care for your pet as you try to take care for you and your family.

Here's some ideas to get you started:

  • Make a 72-hour kit for your pet. Include food, water, medications, litter, etc.
  • Keep your pet's ID up to date, get it microchipped
  • Put a photo of your pet in your emergency kit in case you get separated.
  • Know places outside your area — like a shelter or a friend's home — where you can take a pet.
  • Go to fema.gov or ready.gov for more information.

If you are interested in a pet featured on Pet of the Week, you can call the Best Friends Animal Society at 801-574-2454. Animals featured on the show remain at the Sugar House pet adoption center, located at 2005 S. 1100 East, at least throughout the day they are featured and often beyond. Call ahead before visiting to ensure the animal is still available for adoption.

The Best Friend's Animal Society works with 52 shelters around the state to help facilitate adoptions. All animals featured are spayed or neutered, have a microchip and are vaccinated. Adoption fees vary. To see more animals available for adoption or see the adoption center's monthly specials, visit its website at utah.bestfriends.org.
