LOS ANGELES — Outside hitter Alexa Gray put down 22 kills and seven digs to help the 11th-ranked BYU women's volleyball team to a 3-1 upset of No. 7 North Carolina in the second match of the Women of Troy Baden Invitational at Southern California on Saturday.

Trailing 24-21 in the fourth set, BYU middle blocker Amy Boswell put down back-to-back kills, then blocked the set-winning point in the fourth to take the 25-27, 25-19, 25-17, 26-24 win over the Tar Heels.

Boswell finished with eight kills and eight blocks for the Cougars, who got seven kills and four blocks from Whitney Howard and 39 assists from Camry Godfrey Willardson.

Leigh Andrew led UNC with 18 kills and 14 digs, and Jordyn Schnable added 24 assists for the Tar Heels.

USC 3, BYU 0 — Samantha Bricio put down a match-high 25 kills to lead the Trojans to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 sweep of the Cougars for the Provo squad's first loss of the year.

Gray led BYU with 12 kills, and Cosy Burnett added nine kills for the Cougars. Willardson Godfrey dished out 28 assists for BYU.

BYU 3, CHICAGO STATE 0 — On Friday, the Cougars opened the season and the tournament with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 win over Chicago State.

Burnett had a team-high nine kills, three aces and two blocks for BYU, which got 25 assists and six digs from Godfrey Willardson and six kills each from Gray and Veronica Jones.

BYU plays at St. Louis on Friday to open the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MT.
