HURRICANE — Police have identified the driver who died after his semitruck fell 200 feet down into a ravine.

The driver of the semitruck was identified as Walter K. Steed, 70, of Hildale, according to Hurricane police. Steed left Hildale on Saturday and was traveling out of state to pick up a trailer. He hadn't been heard from since Saturday evening and was reported missing on Tuesday, police said.

Thursday morning, a group of people went to search for Steed and found a semitruck at the bottom of a ravine. Officers responded to the area near state Route 59 and 500 North and discovered Steed dead in the cab of the semitruck, police said.

Investigators found tire tracks showing that the semitruck left the road and traveled along dirt and brush before going over the 200-foot cliff. Police believe the semitruck had been at the bottom of the ravine for several days before it was discovered.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
