SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake Comic Con has already broken several records, but the organizers are going for one more: the largest gathering of people dressed up as comic book characters.
In 2013, Salt Lake Comic Con broke a record for the largest inaugural year of a comic con in North America with around 70,000 attendees, according to Forbes. It has also been named the most-attended convention in Utah.
The 2015 Salt Lake Comic Con kicks off Sept. 24, and on Sept. 26 at 7 a.m., the organizers are hoping to break the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed up as comic book characters. Participants will gather at the south entrance of the Salt Palace Convention Center, and a Guinness World Record official will be on sight to record the attempt.
The record attempt event is free, and people interested in joining aren't required to have an admission ticket to Comic Con, according to the Salt Lake Comic Con website. However, attendees are required to wear a costume of a character who first appeared in comic books before appearing in cartoons, video games or film. Participants must also wear their own costume for the entirety of the event — shared costumes are not allowed in the record attempt.
The comic book characters must be on the approved list and character deviations aren't allowed, the website said. Click here for the full list of approved characters and email heidi@slcomiccon if the character you want isn't on the list.
During the record attempt, all participants will be required to stand in position simultaneously for 5 minutes. All the attendees will receive a free Salt Lake Comic Con world record attempt commemorative pin.
The current world record was set April 29, 2011 with 1,530 participants at the opening ceremony of the International Animation CCJOY LAND in China.
