KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Real Salt Lake's hopes of a cup championship took a significant hit Wednesday night.

Benny Feilhaber notched a goal and an assist, including the game-winner, to help Sporting Kansas City rally by RSL 3-1 in a semifinal of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Sporting Park.

Real Salt Lake struck first through Olmes Garcia, who put Tony Beltran's long ball over the defense into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage just under 25 minutes into the match.

Soni Mustivar drew level 10 minutes later, notching the final touch on Feilhaber's free kick to send both teams into the halftime break tied at 1-1.

Dom Dwyer nearly bagged the go-ahead goal with 10 minutes remaining, beating everyone but the crossbar on a fast-break toward the goal mouth. Feilhaber, though, was there to clean up the rebound and give Sporting Kansas City a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute.

Krisztian Nemeth added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, rounding the defense and calmly slotting home Sporting's third goal of the night to send the hosts to their first Open Cup final since 2012, when the Kansas-based club won the tournament.

Sporting KC will play at Philadelphia on Sept. 30 in the U.S. Open Cup final. The Union knocked off Chicago 1-0 at PPL Park in the other semifinal Wednesday behind Sebastian Le Toux's left-footed blast in the 74th minute.

RSL returns to MLS play Saturday against the Portland Timbers. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.
