TAYLORSVILLE — Three people, including one child, have been treated for smoke inhalation after a small fire started in a Taylorsville apartment, authorities said.

According to Rob Morely, a Unified Fire paramedic, the incident began when a male neighbor smelled smoke and went to investigate its origin. The neighbor then called the fire department when he saw smoke coming from the affected unit.

When crews arrived at the apartment, they found a fire in the kitchen that affected the countertops and cabinets.

At the time that crews responded, two people were unaccounted for in the apartment. The adult male and female child in question were soon located.

The two occupants of the apartment as well as the investigating neighbor were treated on scene for smoke inhalation and released.

The Unified Police Department is involved in investigating the incident and are treating the circumstances surrounding the fire as suspicious, Morely said.

Other residents that may have evacuated during the incident have been cleared to return to their apartments.

The occupants of the affected apartment will not be able to return to their residence Sunday.

This is the second apartment fire in just over a week to occur at this Taylorsville apartment complex. The previous fire was started when three children were playing with a lighter and caused $250,000 worth of damage on July 25.
