DRAPER — Forty-two inmates at Utah State Prison went on a hunger strike Friday morning and said they won't eat until their demands are met.

The 42 inmates are housed in the Uinta Facility, according to a press release from the Utah Department of Corrections, and they are all documented gang members.

The inmates refused their breakfast meals Friday morning and said their list of demands includes release of gang members housed in a different unit.

The Department of Corrections offered each inmate medical evaluations Friday so they can monitor their health while they refuse food. The prison will offer additional evaluations on Monday.

Officials have checked the food items in each inmate's cell to document what they can potentially eat. Inmates will continue to have access to regularly scheduled meals.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
