CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK — The National Park Service announced Thursday that beginning Sept. 1, permits are required for all motor vehicle and bicycle day use on the White Rim and Elephant Hill roads in Canyonlands National Park.

The new permits were proposed in March as a way to "help the park better protect resources and the visitor experience in these wild and remote locations," the National News Service said.

Almost 90 percent of Canyonlands National Park is managed as back-country, and the National Park Service said the remote wilderness and solitude were being diminished by increasing levels of unregulated day use of the back-country road system.

Day-use permits will be available on the Canyonlands National Park website 24 hours in advance of the trip date, the National Park Service said. Some permits for each day will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Island in the Sky Visitors Center for the White Rim Road and at the Needles Visitors Center for Elephant Hill Road.

A total of 50 day-use vehicle permits (including motorcycles) and 50 day-use bicycle permits will be available each day for the White Rim Road. However, a group size will be limited to three vehicles and 15 bicycles.

For the Elephant Hill Road, a total of 24 day-use vehicle permits (including motorcycles) and 12 day-use bicycle permits will be available each day. On this road, group sizes will be limited to three vehicles and 12 bicycles.

Starting Sept. 1, a permit will be required for each motor vehicle and bicycle on the two roads.

The National Park Service said no additional fee will be charged for the day-use permits during the 2015-2016 seasons. Payment of the park entrance fee is still required for day use and will be collected with permits issued online beginning in late spring of 2016 or at the park entrance for walk-in permits.
