Hyrum — The normally quiet block at Main and Center streets in Hyrum became the center of a bomb squad search Tuesday night. Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said it all started after a man robbed the Wells Fargo bank on the northeast corner. Dispatchers received a call from an alarm inside the bank at around 6 p.m.

"He had some sort of device in his hands," Jensen said. "Demanded money or he would detonate the device."

According to bank employees, Jensen said the man was about 5 feet 5 inches tall with a very thin build, a goatee and mustache. Jensen said a teller gave the man money and he quietly walked out the door. Deputies then decided to take some safety measures and call out a bomb squad unit.

"We weren't sure what it [the device] was, or that it was left inside the bank," Jensen said. "Or that he ditched it once he left the bank, so we secured basically that whole block."

Jensen said most of the nearby offices were closed. Several people were evacuated from the bank, from a park across the street and a library. Deputies ultimately found nothing. Now they're hoping someone can help them find the suspected robber. Jensen said it's the first incident like this his department has dealt with in more than a decade.

"I think it's been at least fifteen years since we've had a bank robbery that the sheriff's office has been responsible for," Jensen said.

Anyone who might have information that could help with the investigation can call the Cache County Sheriff's Department at 435-755-1000
