SALT LAKE CITY — Flowcharts: Not a word that inspires an immediate positive reaction in many, let alone excitement.

That didn't stop Lucid Software from defying that impression with perhaps the best animated flowcharts you've ever seen. What makes them so great, you ask? Musical inspiration.

The Songtacular Flowdown is a five-week competition attempting to determine which decade within the last 40 years inspired the best pop music, according to a statement. The battles are each presented in a video flowchart that uniquely represents each song chosen for the battle of the ages.

Boxes, words, arrows, pictures and even video snippets are created in front of the viewer in each video to the beat of each familiar song. Perhaps surprisingly, the videos are addictive entertainment.

"It might sound silly," said David Stauffer, one of the leaders of the project. "But flowcharts can tell you a lot about the song. You get a pretty good idea of how creative the lyrics are and how well the whole song works together. Plus, it's a lot of fun to create a good-natured competition like the Songtacular Flowdown."

Last week saw Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Weezer's "Buddy Holly" in a throwdown against Katy Perry's "Roar" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies," respectively. But this week's matchup may outshine them all pitting a-Ha's "Take on Me" and the Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic" against Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" and Outkast's "Hey Ya," respectively.

If you see something you like, it may be in your best interest to vote. Those who predict the overall winning flowchart video will have a chance to win a $500 gift card from Amazon. But if you lose out on the money, you'll still be a bit richer for the experience of watching these videos.
