WEST VALLEY CITY — Eleven livestock are dead after a fire broke out in a West Valley barn and was stoked by the early morning wind.

The fire sparked around 3:30 a.m. Monday near 6400 West and 3500 South, catching fire to the wooden structure, according to West Valley City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Beichner. Firefighters responded around 6 a.m., but were unable to find a good access point to the fire and wind fed the blaze.

Nine horses, one goat and one sheep were killed. Firefighters were able to rescue one pony. Originally, firefighters reported the loss of 13 horses, but later revised that number. West Valley Animal Control was on-scene assisting.

The barn housed livestock for various owners and investigators were working to track those people down early Monday morning.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire. No electricity runs to the barn.
