Remember when all you needed was Pin the Tail on the Donkey and a frosted cake in order to throw a great kids birthday party? Times have changed and party planning has become big business. You really find out what kind of parent you are when it comes to throwing your kid's birthday party.

Are you the spend-whatever-it-takes kind of parent? Or a find-a-way-to-do-it-better-and-for-less-money kind of parent? Or perhaps you're a hire-a-party-planner-and-let-them-deal-with-it kind of parent? For the rest of you DIYers out there, here are some ideas and budget-friendly solutions that will most definitely delight the kids.

"My four-year-old son Duncan told me he wanted a Sasquatch party. I didn't even know he knew what a Sasquatch was," said Herriman mother and expert party planner, Lindsay Shields. "I love putting parties together and took his idea as a challenge."

"The kids made their own terrariums as I told them the legend of the Sasquatch. Then he came to our party! It was really my teenage son dressed in a Ghillie suit we got from Scheels."

"He looked so much like a Sasquatch that some kids cried when they saw him in the backyard. They warmed up a little when we did photos with him," Shields said. "The kids loved the party and people are still talking about it a year later. I love that!"

According to Shields, there's no need to buy the party kit for whatever hot theme your child wants. "My daughter wanted a Frozen party, but the party supply stores were completely out of Frozen decorations. We went to the internet and printed Frozen stock photos and cut our own snowflakes."

Experts like Sheilds say searching Pinterest, blogs or an old-fashioned Google search is your best ally when it comes to party planning.

American Ninja Warrior

The entire country is captivated by this summer's TV ninja obstacle phenomenon. This is a great theme if your child has a hard time limiting the amount of invited guests. Plan the party at a local park, plenty of room for everyone! Set the ninja mood by providing each child an inexpensive headscarf so they look like ninjas as they run through the playground obstacle course.
