LAYTON — Police said Monday they do not believe the death of a 93-year-old woman, whose body reportedly lay in her bed for at least a day before officers were called, was the result of a homicide.

A preliminary autopsy conducted by the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office Monday revealed nothing suspicious, said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman. While toxicology results are still several weeks out, Lyman said as of Monday the death is not considered a homicide.

The woman's name was not released Monday pending notification of all of her family members.

Police were notified of the woman's death Sunday afternoon when her 68-year-old son mentioned to a convenience store clerk "that his mother had passed away the previous day," Lyman said.

The son seemed to be in distress when he told the clerk, according to Lyman. "He brought it up to the clerk in the context of, 'I don't know what to do.'"

The son, who has a "significantly diminished mental capacity," lived with his mother in a mobile home at 2 Grover Street, the lieutenant said.

Police went to the home after being called by the clerk and found the mother's body in her bed.

"We're guessing just based on when neighbors had seen her last and what her son was saying, that (she died) sometime within the last day or so," Lyman said.

The mother did have a history of medical problems, he said. There were no obvious signs of trauma.

The death was initially treated as suspicious Monday only because of how long she is believed to have been dead.

"The only thing that (made) it suspicious … is the son spent some time in the trailer with her before alerting anyone that she had passed away," Lyman said.

The son was reportedly staying Monday with other family members.
