OGDEN — A man was found dead in the road of an Ogden neighborhood Monday with a possible gunshot wound. Police are investigating his death as a homicide.

William Patrick Hicks, 32, was found in the 28th block of Childs Avenue of an apparent gunshot.

Investigators announced they were "pursuing significant leads," had filed "multiple search warrants" and conducted a number of interviews Monday that led to the arrest of Andrew Dominic Esquer, 30, for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice.

Police believe the two men were arguing in the street when Esquer pulled out a shotgun and shot Hicks, striking him in the upper torso, Ogden Police Lt. Nate Cline said. Esquer fled, hiding the gun and ammunition in some plumbing equipment outside a nearby home, Cline said.

A motive for the argument, information about Esquer's arrest and details about how the two men knew each other were not released. It is unclear whether Esquer had any ties to the home where he is accused of stashing the gun.

Miriam, who asked that her last name not be used, said she was watching movies with a friend about 3:45 a.m. when they heard a nearby gunshot. Initially, she thought it was a firework. But when her cousin drove by about 10 minutes later, he saw a body lying in the road and told Miriam to meet him outside.

"I tried to see if he was still alive. I touched him to see if he still had a pulse. But by the time we got there, he was gone," she said.

The man was shot in the upper body and was "full of blood," she said.

"I was panicking. I just started freaking out. I had never seen someone like that," she said.

Miriam said she did not know the victim and had not seen him before.

Over the past three years, Hicks has pleaded guilty to misdemeanors, including possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and interfering with an arresting officer, according to court records.

Esquer does not have a significant criminal history in Utah.

Police were looking for any witnesses or surveillance video that may give insight into what happened. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 801-629-8221.
