BOUNTIFUL — As a mother of teenage daughters, Ashlie Evans understands it’s hard growing up weighing the desire to be modest and in fashion.

When Evans moved back to Utah with her family four years ago, she thought it would be easy to find modest clothing, but she said it wasn’t much different than living outside the state.

When prom season rolled around, she really became frustrated. As her oldest daughter was shopping for dresses, there didn’t seem to be an option that seemed what she considered both fashionable and modest.

In an effort to create an environment where girls could find something that fit both of those categories, Evans started Twirl, a dress boutique that sells modest skirts, tops and dresses for teenagers and women.

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Evans and her sisters grew up knowing that modesty was important.

“I just wanted to create an environment where they felt that we could find them something that was modest that they felt pretty in and not like that they were sacrificing fashion for doing what the Lord wants them to do,” Evans said.

Evans recognizes Latter-day Saints aren’t the only people looking for modest clothing, and hopes everyone will come to Twirl.

Evans said her store is a good place to start because, “it’s one less battle knowing that you’re not fighting with strapless dresses and you’re not fighting with spaghetti straps.”

Evans opened Twirl in June 2014 and runs it with her mother, Peggy Plumb. Her two daughters also work at the store.

Though they didn’t see a lot of traffic during their first dance season, which was homecoming, the store saw a lot of shoppers by prom.

“We only sell one dress per school … so no one has to play who wore it best at their school,” Evans said.

Evans said she hopes girls can come in and feel loved at her boutique, and she encourages girls to come who just want to try on dresses for fun with their friends, even if they’re not old enough to date.

Twirl also provides a 20 percent off discount for women who are buying clothes for an LDS mission and has previously donated clothes to sister missionaries in poor areas.
