HEBER CITY — Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus was back in Utah on Monday checking out the development of his new course, Red Ledges in Heber City.

The 18-time Major winner put in the ceremonial golden shovel dig for the new course, which will be one of his signature nine-hole short courses next to what he calls "the strong course," Red Ledges' 18-hole championship layout.

"I think there are a lot of people here who will like something a little bit easier," Nicklaus said. "A par-3 is kind of a golf course to introduce people to the game, for people who don't have a lot of time, and more of a recreation area. It's much of the way of golf.

"This will be a nice little golf course."

"The Golden Bear" doesn't play much golf anymore. Besides his course design business, he has now ventured into his own ice cream label, a $1.99-per-pint business aimed at providing tasty desserts for low-income families.

Nicklaus also heard the criticism of the U.S. Open and Chambers Bay this year. Click the video to hear comments on the recent major and its course's layout from the PGA legend.
