SALT LAKE CITY — With school coming to an end for many around the state this time of year, more children will be outside playing. And parents and drivers need to use extreme caution this summer.

It's a seemingly perfect combination: blue skies, green trees and the perfect outdoor temperatures. While it’s a time for fun, already the Ogden Police Department has seen some scares. Tuesday night, a 3-year-old boy was playing on the sidewalk in his neighborhood and was hit by a car.

“He wasn’t aware that the child was coming down the sidewalk,” Glen Buss of the Ogden City Police Department said.

The child is expected to recover, but has been hospitalized. Buss said at all times drivers need to be vigilant around their car when backing up and around the house, but that summer is especially important to be extremely cautious.

Every year we have children killed because they didn't realize that children were behind their vehicle.

“Every year we have children killed because they didn’t realize that children were behind their vehicle,” Buss said.

As a result, the police are asking everyone to do their part this summer to be vigilant and to watch out for the influx of children in neighborhoods. Here are a few tips to remember this summer:

  • Don’t let your children play in the front yard unattended.
  • Always check in your driveway and around your car before leaving home.
  • Put children safety props in the road, such as “child at play” flags, or signs to alert drivers.
  • Slow down on the roadways.
  • Watch for balls or toys coming into the road.
  • Anticipate that children are already playing in the neighborhood.
Buss cautioned drivers to slow down, saying, “There is no where you have to get to by speeding.”
