HERRIMAN — Police said Monday that investigators determined damage caused to three cars in the Herriman area was not gunshots, as one victim believed, but rocks.

Saturday night, some teens were driving eastbound on 13400 South near 6200 West when they heard three loud noises and the rear driver’s side window shattered. At the time Kylee Stamper and her friend Brenna Vincent thought it was gunshots.

Monday morning, however, Unified Police Department said investigators determined the damage was caused by rocks, possibly projected by a slingshot. Lt. Justin Hoyal emphasized that they did not ever believe gunshots occurred.

Hoyal said investigators found dents in the body of the car and a rock in the vehicle. Bullets would have pierced the vehicle, rather than dented it, Hoyal said.

In total, police received three reports of vehicles being driven in the area sustaining similar damage. In addition to Stamper's vehicle, another vehicle's side window was shattered and a third vehicle had dents in the front fender and below the side mirror. Nobody in the vehicles was injured.

Hoyal said investigators believe the vandals were located in a field north of 13400 South and threw or used a slingshot to propel the rocks at the cars from that location. Police searched the field but did not locate the individuals responsible.

UPD is asking for anyone with information about the incidents to contact the department at 801-743-7000.
