WOODS CROSS — Mills Park in Woods Cross is home to a brand new 18-hole disc golf course. Mills Park already consists of baseball diamonds, open fields used for soccer and lacrosse, a sand volleyball court, a children’s playground and open valleys for family gatherings.

Mayor Rick Earnshaw, along with Woods Cross residents, decided that something needed to be added to enhance Mills Park. Brett Anderson, a Woods Cross resident, approached Earnshaw with the idea of the 18-hole disc golf course. “I told him I thought it was a great idea and told him to put a proposal together,” said Earnshaw. Anderson met with the Woods Cross City Council and was given the go ahead to proceed.

Mayor Earnshaw and Anderson developed multiple ideas for the course, trying to minimize the impact to residential yards adjacent to the park. Kellen Doom, Joel Langford and Jeremy Adams came up with the final design and cost of the project. Also involved in the course installation was Curtis Stahle, a youth working on his Eagle Scout project.

“It has been a great addition to our park and has opened it up to a new use that can be enjoyed by all ages and levels of disc golf expertise,” Earnshaw said.

The reason behind the disc golf course is to help families be more active.

“It’s to encourage people to get out of the house and the TV and video games and get out as a family to help create a healthy lifestyle,” Earnshaw said. “The course is free and is a great family activity.”

The course has been open for a few weeks and people are already taking full advantage.

“There’s a 70-year-old who lives a mile from Mills Park, goes out daily, doctor required, walks to the park and throws around a few discs,” Earnshaw said. “The gentleman told me it has made his walks more fun.”

The city will be holding a grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the east side of Mills Park. The festivities will include recognizing those who made the disc golf course possible and teaching families the rules and skills of disc golf as well as course etiquette. There will be competitions with prizes donated by sponsors of the event.

A tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, June 13, for all levels of participants, beginners as well as fanatics.
