SALT LAKE CITY — Two motorbike accidents Saturday are a reminder for everyone to be extra cautious on the roads this holiday weekend.

Accident on state Route 32

Saturday before 11 a.m., a dirt bike was traveling south on state Route 32 at Browns Canyon Road in Summit County when a bus traveling north on the same road made a left turn in front of the cyclist.

The biker, 24-year-old Jeremy J. Morgan of Park City, could not avoid the bus and his bike slid underneath. Morgan was wearing a helmet, but was flown to a Salt Lake area hospital in critical condition. There were no injuries to anyone in the other vehicle involved, which was occupied by the driver, five students, and one chaperone. The bus driver told investigators that he did not see the motorcycle before he turned.

Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be involved in the accident.

Accident on state Route 68

On Saturday afternoon around 4:40, deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a motorcycle crash near mile marker 15, a mile west of state Route 68 in Utah County. According to officials, the crash took place on Soldier Pass Road when the driver, an unidentified 21-year-old man from Orem, lost control on loose gravel. The rider was wearing a helmet, but witnesses to the incident said that it was dislodged during the crash.

Motorcycle Safety
  • A well-maintained motorcycle
    • Good brakes
    • Properly inflated tires
  • Safety gear
    • Wear a helmet, goggles, boots over the ankles, gloves and a jacket made of leather or another protective material.

The driver was conscious, but experiencing severe back pain when his friends transported him to deputies who then had him air-lifted via medical helicopter. He was taken to Mountain View Hospital in Payson once stable. Goshen and Saratoga Springs EMS personnel responded to the scene.

His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening and drugs and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Staying safe

Memorial Day marks the beginning of Utah’s "100 deadliest days," where Utah Highway Patrol says Utah experiences approximately one death per day on the road. Motorcyclists can do their part by being sure their equipment is well-maintained, have sufficient training on their vehicle, and obeying traffic laws. Other motorists on the road can help by keeping their eyes out for motorcyclists, particularly during this busy holiday season.
