SANDY — A man died Friday night following a collision with a vehicle on I-15 after stepping out of his car on the highway, police said.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Friday night, Don Smith, 72, of Millcreek, was in a minor two-car crash on northbound I-15 at 7800 S. where his Chevy Silverado collided with an Acura, according to Sgt. Richard Nielson of Utah Highway Patrol. Smith then exited his vehicle and attempted to both check on the driver of the Acura and direct traffic around the accident, Nielson said. As Smith attempted to cross a lane of traffic onto the shoulder, he was struck by a separate white Acura.

Smith was transported to IMC hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to Nielson. He emphasized that individuals in such scenarios should always stay in their cars and wait for officers to arrive at the scene.

There were no other injuries reported from either the initial crash or the ensuing pedestrian collision. Impairment was not believed to be a cause in either incident.
