REXBURG, Idaho (AP) — A former student at Brigham Young University's Idaho campus who altered his college transcript to rise from a failing pre-med student to getting $7,000 in academic scholarships has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years of supervised probation.
The Post Register reports that 24-year-old Jacob Mahonri Espinal was credited with 151 days at his sentencing Monday in 7th District Court. Espinal pleaded guilty in March to grand theft and computer fraud.
Investigators say Espinal was a student employee with access to a computer system that allowed him to change his status from being on academic probation to being a straight-A student.
Judge Greg Moeller says Espinal stole not only grades but also somebody's spot in the university.
