SALT LAKE CITY — Two adults and a small child were displaced from their house Tuesday after a fire caused extensive damage.

In addition, one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Firefighters were called to 940 W. 400 South just before 11 a.m. When they arrived, they found the fire burning on the outside front porch and inside the first floor, Salt Lake fire spokesman Jasen Asay said. The fire quickly spread to the second floor and the attic, he said.

The occupants of the home were already outside and safe when firefighters arrived.

As crews worked to extinguish the flames, one firefighter had to be treated.

"He was with the crew that was up on the second floor in the attic space where it was extremely hot. He is suffering from heat exhaustion symptoms," Asay said.

The firefighter was treated at the scene and then transported in good condition to a local hospital for additional treatment, he said.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated Tuesday. It was not known whether the fire started on the inside or outside of the house. An estimate of the damage to the house was not immediately available.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to provide assistance to the family while they were displaced from their home.
