SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has signed a bill that gives a state commission until late summer to suggest where a state prison may be rebuilt.
The bill approved by the Republican governor late Wednesday allows Herbert and lawmakers to then weigh in on the decision during a special legislative session.
Under the law, a state commission has until Aug. 1 to find a new location.
Herbert will then call lawmakers into a special session to consider it.
Utah officials want to relocate the current 700-acre prison in Draper to build a modern prison and to free up the land for development.
