SALT LAKE CITY — Starting at midnight Thursday, Utahns have an opportunity to give to causes and organizations that make Utah a great place to live.

The 24-hour online giving campaign, Love UT Give UT, seeks to raise $2 million for some 500 Utah nonprofit organizations and schools.

To contribute, go to www.loveUTgiveUT.org, point, click and donate.

This is the third year of the campaign, which last year raised more than $1 million for 460 charities in a single day.

"The first year was certainly a year of growing pains. Last year was a year of growth and this year seems to be the year of understanding. People get what Love UT Give UT is all about and they recognize it not only for the leverage that’s provided in their giving but it’s so easy," said Blair Hodson, director of initiatives for the Community Foundation of Utah, host of the campaign.

This year's campaign features $400,000 in matching and challenge grants, Hodson said.

"Anyone who gives during Love UT Give UT, there’s a very good chance that their gift will be matched. A gift tomorrow is very likely to be leveraged," he said Thursday, adding that even the smallest donations can help make a big difference for nonprofit organizations and schools.

Whether one is a patron of the arts, or is appreciative of the services provided by nonprofits that serve as a social safety net, or the environment or any aspect of our lives, they are affected by work done by nonprofits. Of course education affects everyone and that's a big part of Love UT Give UT, too.

"The organizations that get the most unique donors will receive a $10,000 prize. Those payouts go six places deep. So there’s an element of competition in this as well that makes for a really fun day," he said.

Not only does Love UT Give UT raise money for nonprofit organizations and schools, the event raises awareness about the broad spectrum of services and support offered by nonprofit agencies.

"We hope that people will spend a little bit of time at Love UT Give UT.org not only to give but also, there’s mecca of information about the work that’s being done by nonprofits large and small all over the state," he said.

Love UT Give UT provides a simple and safe way to contribute online and single platform opportunity to thank and give financial assistance to organizations that enhance the state's quality of life, Hodson said.

“Whether one is a patron of the arts, or is appreciative of the services provided by nonprofits that serve as a social safety net, or the environment or any aspect of our lives, they are affected by work done by nonprofits. Of course education affects everyone and that’s a big part of Love UT Give UT, too," Hodson said.

"I think that (Thursday) should serve as an opportunity for everyone in the state to express their thanks to these nonprofits and that thanks should come in the form of a donation, no matter how small."
