PARLEYS CANYON — Deputies took four people into custody following a chase and crash in Parleys Canyon Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Ron Bridge of the Summit County Sheriff's Office said a deputy responded to a call of a retail theft at Wal-Mart at Kimball Junction in Park City around 5:30 a.m. A Wal-mart employee told police two men entered the store and concealed unspecified items before walking out, Bridge said.

Witnesses saw the men get into a car and got the license plate number down for police. When the deputy arrived, he spotted the vehicle, which was stolen out of the Salt Lake area, leaving and attempted to stop it, Bridge said.

Summit County dispatch put out an Attempt to Locate on the vehicle and the deputy spotted the car on I-80 and attempted a traffic stop near the Salt Lake/Summit County line, Bridge said.

The vehicle sped up, but after the short chase, the vehicle crashed at mile marker 130 near the mouth of Parleys Canyon "due to driver error," Bridge said.

Two males and one female fled the scene on foot after the vehicle crashed and a fourth occupant remained in the car and was taken into custody, Bridge said.

The three other people were eventually caught along I-80. They sustained minor injuries, Bridge said.

Sheriff Martinez, also of the Summit County Sheriff's Office, said three of the four people were transported to area hospitals to be treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Draper resident Justin Michael Brinton, 34, was booked into the Summit County Jail on suspicion of shoplifting, Bridge said.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney will screen the case for charges of evading and possession of a stolen vehicle, Bridge said.

The incident closed one lane of eastbound traffic on I-80.
