SALT LAKE CITY — The West High School robotics team built a robot designed to stack tote boxes, and it will be taking it to a robotics competition next week.

The team was tasked with designing, creating and building the robot, and will be entering it into competition at Utah’s FIRST Robotics regional competition that features entries from around the western United States and Canada.

Many of the students in the group aspire to careers in a similar field, and this is excellent preparation.

“Many of us want to be engineers, and this is perfect experience to help us experience what engineering school is going to be like,” said Kieran Grant, a senior in the group.

Senior Sam Sampinos plans to study mechanical engineering in college in an effort to benefit humanity: “I'm really interested in prosthetics, like building functional prosthetics, so this is great," he said.

The team is sponsored by Rio Tinto, which recognizes that its search for future workers can begin at this sort of grassroots level.

“We have robotics throughout the mining industry,” said Heston Beesley of Rio Tinto. “It's not just mining."

The FIRST Robotics competition will take place March 11-14 at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.
