SALT LAKE CITY — For Bobby and Andrea Kuhn, creating a dance company was always a dream.

Bobby Kuhn, a trained breakdancer, has been dancing for 15 years.

“I started dancing when I was 18 years old. We practiced in the basement. I had no form of formal training,” he gestures jokingly at his wife. “It’s completely the opposite of her background.”

Andrea Kuhn started dancing at the age of 3 in a neighborhood dance studio. She participated in dance competitions during her young adult life and majored in dance during her time at the University of Utah.

At the beginning, Andrea and Bobby hosted multi-style dance workshops in the Salt Lake City area. When the couple started the company Underground, the vision was to focus on performing.

“After dancers graduate, sometimes they don’t have an opportunity to continue," Andrea said. "It ends there for some, but we wanted to create more opportunities for adult dancers in Utah.”

The company features a fusion of various dance styles but focuses on implementing street dance in collaboration with contemporary styles.

I like to dance because it feels like me. It's something you can't take away from me. People should come out to see the show, they'll see something new.

The Underground show this year, "Forces of Nature," is centered on the four forces of nature.

“It started out as just an idea I came up with on a plane. But now that we’ve gotten into the creation of it, we’ve really taken a focus on each force," Andrea said. "The idea behind it is to show that humans can’t be controlled.”

With the show approaching quickly, the dancers are excited for this season’s performances.

“I like to dance because it feels like me. It’s something you can’t take away from me," said Hemi Harki, a 14-year-old junior Underground performer. "People should come out to see the show, they’ll see something new.”

Underground has 38 members and its junior Underground team has 60 members. The junior members are between the ages of 8 and 17 years old and the Underground team is for members 18 and older. Each year, the two teams prepare for their biggest show during the spring season. Throughout the year Underground participates in events throughout Utah. In addition to local show performances, dancers volunteer to teach workshops hosted at local schools for free.

Andrea and Bobby believe the show will create an unforgettable experience for the audience.

“We want the audience to feel something. We want them to create their own story.”

Aspen Anger, 15, is passionate about the company.

“It’s a way to express yourself. During the show, there will be more street dancing than most people are used to seeing,” Aspen said.

When asked why she loves dancing, company performer Aleisa Turner says, “It just comes from the heart, it’s a part of me.”
