LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Two northern Utah men will serve three years' probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges in the death of a beloved deer.
Shelby Rhodes and Steven Spillett were sentenced in Logan Monday. They will be barred from hunting during their probation, and authorities say they want to extend the loss of hunting rights to 10 years.
The well-known buck named Bart was found dead in the fall of 2013, and officials said photos on a hunting website led them to the 36-year-old Rhodes and 28-year-old Spillett.
Prosecutor Jacob Gordon says punishments are needed because poaching cases are on the rise. A defense attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
The Logan Herald Journal reports that the men were also ordered to pay $8,000 to a state anti-poaching fund.
